paintFAIL to prepare and you prepare to fail.

Nowhere is this maxim more true than when it comes to painting.

So if the time has come to paint at your place, here are a few tips to ensure the job goes as smoothly as possible.

The first thing to do is save yourself the frustration of having to step over furniture.

Clear the room or furniture as well as curtains and blinds, and you will also have a clear psychological space to work in.

Light fittings should be covered and or taped to protect them from paint. Ditto for power points and light switches.

Put down a cloth drop sheet.

Good preparation is the first step to ensure a smooth finish.

Give the walls a good wash with sugar soap as this will ensure any marks, dirt or grease not only won’t show through but won’t cause the new paint to peel or bubble.

Small imperfections on the bottom layer will look a lot bigger by the time the top coat goes on.

Take the time to fill any cracks or gouges and sand them back.

Then prime or undercoat as needed.

Cut-in with a brush or applicator pad then paint the rest of the area with a roller. When it comes to ceilings, roll the paint on in manageable strips and roll towards the main source of natural light.

If you plan to paint the cornice in the same colour, work on that first.

When it comes to walls start in a corner and paint in sections from top to bottom.
